CHAPTER 34

WILF

Rebecca was a feisty one, that was for sure.

With her phone in her hand, recording via an app, she was in full journalist mode, questioning one of the poor souls standing and guarding the cordon.

“One of his family members are inside this building. What updates are expected in the next two hours?”

The well-built, middle-aged man stood stoic, not engaging with any of the questions.

“What is the nature of the lockdown? Has there been a chemical spill? Are the locals in danger?”

Still no answer.

A large group of locals were now gathered around the lab, asking questions and demanding answers. It seemed several workers on the inside had concealed their phones and spread the word to loved ones and friends in the village.

Rebecca’s mind was spinning; Wilf knew the look well. He often saw Linda do the same when she was trying to work out a new plan.

A smile grew on her face, and she turned back to the man.

“Last chance,” she teased.

He shook his head, unwavering.

“Okay. Fine.”

Rebecca walked towards the crowd and whistled to get their attention.

“Everyone, there has been a gas leak inside the building and our family and friends are in danger!”

A series of gasps and curse words erupted from the small group, and several of the men on the cordon started to butt in, trying to reassure the villagers.

“That’s not true,” one said.

“We can’t divulge, but it’s not that,” said another.

Rebecca turned back to face them.

“I think it’s time you started telling us the truth then.”
